In the recently released Global Innovation Index 2025, several Middle Eastern and North African countries have shown significant progress in innovation, with Saudi Arabia leading the charge.

Daren Tang, the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), highlighted that the fastest-advancing economies in the index are those that view innovation as a fundamental engine of resilience, growth, and competitiveness.

Saudi Arabia, in particular, has made impressive strides. The Kingdom has climbed 60 places in three years, reaching 23rd in the top 100 emerging ecosystems, according to Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network. The country's improvements are evident in various aspects of the index.

In the human capital and research category, Saudi Arabia placed 35th. The Kingdom secured 36th in the infrastructure pillar and 31st in high input scores. These rankings reflect the country's commitment to investing in education, infrastructure, and research.

Moreover, Saudi Arabia has made a significant leap in the Global Intellectual Property Index, as per a report from the US Chamber of Commerce. The country's score rose by 17.5 percent, showcasing its dedication to protecting and promoting intellectual property rights.

Other Middle Eastern countries have also made notable strides. Qatar ranks first in tertiary inbound mobility and shows strong performance in information and communication technology adoption. Morocco ranks 57th, Bahrain 62nd, Jordan 65th, and Kuwait 73rd in the index.

Notably, Qatar and the UAE have also made progress, with Qatar ranking 48th and the UAE advancing to 30th place in the report.

Switzerland leads the Global Innovation Index 2025, followed by Sweden in second place and the US in third. The rest of the top 10 includes South Korea, Singapore, the UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Denmark, and China.

Daren Tang, representing Singapore as the Director General of WIPO, noted that the Global Innovation Index 2025 reveals both encouraging progress and challenges that still need to be addressed for countries to fully harness their innovation potential.

In the Middle East and North Africa region, the progress made by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, and others serves as a testament to the region's potential for innovation and economic growth. As these countries continue to invest in education, infrastructure, and research, they are poised to become significant players in the global innovation landscape.
