Professor Dr Mohammad Ayub Islam Joins Bangladesh University Grants Commission

Professor Dr Mohammad Ayub Islam, a distinguished academic from the University of Chittagong, has taken on a new role as a full-time member of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC). This appointment, made by the government, is significant for the UGC and the academic community in Bangladesh.

As a full-time UGC member, Dr. Ayub Islam will participate in decision-making processes regarding higher education standards and policies. His responsibilities include contributing to the development of unified recruitment and promotion policies for university faculty, aimed at improving governance while balancing the autonomy of public universities.

Dr. Ayub Islam brings a wealth of academic and administrative experience to his new role. He has served as an advisor and MBA program coordinator at the Chittagong Independent University Business School. Prior to this, he was the chairman of the Bureau of Business Research at Chittagong University and the director of the Chittagong Stock Exchange.

In his new role, Dr. Ayub Islam is expected to collaborate with other university leaders and government officials to address challenges in education policy. However, there has been noted tension between the UGC and public university teachers regarding consultation processes for policy changes.

The appointment of Professor Dr Mohammad Ayub Islam is for a four-year term. He will continue to hold his current positions at the University of Chittagong, including head of the Department of Accounting and the Bureau of Business Research, and his role as an advisor and MBA programme coordinator at the School of Business, Chittagogon Independent University.

The Ministry of Education's Secondary and Higher Education Division is responsible for issuing notifications related to academic appointments. The effective date of Professor Dr Mohammad Ayub Islam's appointment is from the date he joined the UGC, which was on 18 August. He reported to UGC Chairman Professor Dr S M A Faiz on the same day.

UGC officers association and employee union leaders have congratulated Prof Ayub on his appointment as a full-time member. In addition to his salary and allowances from his previous position, he will receive all other benefits as per existing regulations.

This appointment marks an important step in the ongoing efforts to improve higher education in Bangladesh, and Professor Dr Mohammad Ayub Islam's expertise and experience are sure to make a valuable contribution to the UGC.
