Meghalaya Schools to Take August Holidays for Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day

Meghalaya schools will be taking a month-long break in August 2025, primarily to coincide with two significant holidays: Raksha Bandhan on August 9 and Independence Day on August 15. The latter date also marks Janmashtami, a festival celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna.

Raksha Bandhan, a festival that symbolises the bond between brothers and sisters, will see sisters tying a protective thread (rakhi) on brothers’ wrists. This festival is observed as a restricted holiday in Meghalaya.

Independence Day, a national holiday commemorating India's independence from British rule in 1947, is marked with flag hoisting, cultural programs, and patriotic activities in schools across Meghalaya and the country. Janmashtami, a festival with spiritual and cultural importance, is also observed on the same day with fasting, devotional singing, and reenactments of Krishna’s life.

While other local festivals like Behdienkhlam, a significant traditional festival in Meghalaya, occur earlier in July, they fall outside August and do not affect the August school holidays.

The holidays aim to strengthen principles of harmony and cultural tolerance, providing students in Meghalaya a chance to observe important traditions and national pride during August. The holiday calendar is designed to offer students a well-rounded and rewarding experience, allowing them to participate in festivities honoring Meghalaya's cultural and spiritual legacy.

It is not specified when Rajasthan and Karnataka will observe Raksha Bandhan, Independence Day, or Ganesh Chaturthi in August 2025. However, it is known that schools in these states will also have holidays in August, and they may include observance of national holidays and religious festivals.

The breaks will provide educators and students with a crucial chance to take a break from their studies, ensuring they return refreshed and ready for the new academic year.

During the extended August 2025 holidays, Meghalaya's students will have opportunities for both educational-and-self-development and learning, engaging in observance of important traditions like Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day, as well as participating in cultural programs and celebrating national pride.

With the holidays designed to emphasize harmony and cultural tolerance, students will also have chances to immerse themselves in local festivals and spiritual practices such as Janmashtami, enriching their understanding of Meghalaya's cultural and spiritual legacy.
