School principal concurrently heads two ailing institutions in North Rhine-Westphalia
In an unusual turn of events, a school principal in the Lower Rhine region of Germany has been absent from his duties for over five years due to illness. Despite being officially the principal of two high schools - one in Emmerich and the other in Wesel - he has reportedly never been seen at one of the schools.
The headmaster's absence has not gone unnoticed, with the school supervision keeping a close eye on the situation. As a temporary solution, he was appointed as the principal of a high school in Wesel, which is closer to his residence. However, he has not yet been able to take up this position.
In the meantime, acting headmasters have taken over the tasks at both schools, ensuring the operational capability of the institutions. The regional government in Düsseldorf has acknowledged the complexity of the case but has confirmed that there have been no failures in school supervision.
It's important to note that this case is not comparable to that of a teacher at the Wesel vocational college who has been ill for 16 years and recently caused a stir. The schools in Emmerich and Wesel have received additional teaching positions to relieve the principals and ensure teaching coverage.
The headmaster has undergone several medical examinations, but his health status remains unclear. The district government has stated that this is a complex but officially acceptable case, with deputy principals managing daily tasks at the affected schools.
This situation comes at a time when the education system in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) is grappling with a significant number of teachers being sick for a month or longer. Approximately 9800 teachers in NRW have been sick for such a period, which corresponds to about five percent of civil servants and around three percent of employed teachers in the school system.
Despite the challenges, the school system in the Lower Rhine region continues to function, with the schools being monitored as part of the school supervision. The headmaster's case serves as a reminder of the resilience of the education system and the adaptability of those within it to overcome unexpected circumstances.
