Are you ready to hear about a fantastic opportunity for aspiring young people from South America? A unique school project has been underway in Thuringia, offering a pathway to vocational training and a chance to be part of the Thuringian workforce.
This revolutionary initiative, known as the "German Professional School" (GPS), welcomed its first batch of 40 students from amazing countries like Mexico, Ecuador, Guatemala, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, and Bolivia. Recently, the program expanded its reach, attracting international talent beyond those living in Thuringia.
Over the course of four months, these 17 dynamic women and 23 courageous men will immerse themselves in various courses, internships, and company visits to prepare them for an exciting apprenticeship adventure in the Free State.
The GPS began its journey last year, primarily providing opportunities to young people with a migration background residing in the Free State. However, it's now aiming even higher, with sights set on bridging the talent gap in Thuringia's future workforce.
Boos-John ponders refining the concept
As the GPS program evolves, its organizers are considering improvements to better serve participants and the regional economy. For instance, they are looking to enhance the economic focus, strengthen industry ties, and increase coordination with other initiatives targeting workforce development.
Let's talk numbers! By 2035, Thuringia is projected to face a shortage of approximately 170,000 workers. To address this looming issue, the GPS could be an integral part of meeting the demand for skilled professionals in the years to come.
The GPS isn't just limited to one location, either! You'll find it spread across four locations: Eisenach, Mühlhausen, Gotha, and Jena. The program is currently in its pilot phase, but the potential to create a ripple effect in the Thuringian job market is immense.
Boos-John shares her thoughts on the future direction of the GPS: "We view the GPS as a promising strategy for attracting skilled labor, but we aim to refine its approach, for example, by enhancing the industry focus and optimizing collaboration with existing initiatives in this area."
