In a significant shift from his tech mogul days, Steve Ballmer, the former CEO of Microsoft and current owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, has embarked on a new mission: community-driven philanthropy. Since retiring from Microsoft in 2015, Ballmer, alongside his wife Connie, has been actively involved in the Ballmer Group, a philanthropic investment company they co-founded.

The Ballmer Group's mission is to improve economic mobility, particularly for children and families in disadvantaged communities. The organisation concentrates its efforts largely in Southeast Michigan, around Steve Ballmer's hometown, working collaboratively with philanthropy, government, and business sectors to achieve these goals.

The Ballmers' approach to philanthropy is strategic and local, with a focus on tangible improvements in children's lives and family stability. They have invested in early childhood and K-12 education, college access and readiness, career, workforce, and housing initiatives. The Ballmer Group has given away more than half a billion dollars this year alone.

One of their significant investments includes StriveTogether, a nonprofit that connects local communities to a nationwide network to improve education and career outcomes for young people. The Ballmer Group has invested $175 million in this initiative. They have also pumped $23 million into the Partnership for Los Angeles Schools and $24 million into the Boys and Girls Club of America.

Connie Ballmer, an alumna of the University of Oregon, has also made a significant impact on her alma mater. A $400 million grant was given to create the Ballmer Institute of Children's Behavioral Health.

The Ballmers measure success in their philanthropy by factors such as reduced community violence, increased teachers of color in schools, higher high school graduation rates, and better kindergarten readiness. Connie Ballmer believes that children have no voice and do not get to choose where they are born and live.

Steve Ballmer, initially skeptical about the role of philanthropy, was later convinced by his wife. He has since become a passionate advocate for this cause, stating that he is not interested in owning another pro sports franchise, preferring to focus on his philanthropy instead.

This shift from broad wealth accumulation toward focused, community-driven philanthropy has seen Steve Ballmer's net worth soar past $100 billion. However, Ballmer has no superyacht, no new wardrobe, and no new spouse, choosing instead to invest in the future of his community.

The Ballmers are especially connected to communities such as Los Angeles County, Washington state, southeast Michigan, and Oregon. Their philanthropy exemplifies a strategic, local investment in social outcomes, differing from the global scope of philanthropies like the Gates Foundation but equally ambitious in impact within its targeted region.
