Students from Neuss and Kaarst Floris Schulze, fluent in various languages, gather together
In the heart of Germany, the city of Neuss recently hosted a unique event that brought together students, educators, and cultural enthusiasts - the German-French Reading Competition. The competition, held under the patronage of Neuss Mayor Reiner Breuer, saw 17 candidates from the 2nd year of learning participate, each impressing the audience with their reading skills.
The jury, composed of German-French representatives, watched in awe as an upper secondary school student delivered a captivating reading of a short, unknown text. Neuss Mayor Reiner Breuer personally honoured the participants, teachers, jury, and organizers, emphasizing the importance of language for relations with France, a neighbouring country with a long-standing friendship.
The organizers, including Magda Holzberg, Annette Lohkamp, Lilli Käfer, Helga Schwarze, and others, emphasized the courage of the candidates for competing with numerous rivals, even beyond the city limits of Neuss. All candidates received a certificate and a small gift, made possible by generous donations from Neuss sponsors such as Hitch Cinema, the Book House at the Minster, and the city of Neuss itself.
The competition had four proficiency levels: 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th year, and upper secondary school. Liliane Loegel and Geneviève Quinaud, both present, addressed all participants in a short speech in French, expressing their gratitude and admiration for the participants' efforts.
As the competition came to a close, Neuss Mayor Reiner Breuer highlighted the 60-year-old German-French friendship, sealed in the Élysée Treaty in 1963. He expressed hope that many students would participate again in the competition next year.
