A New Era for Taichung Second Senior High School: Co-ed Classes in Full Swing Come 2025-26

After three failed attempts spanning over three decades, Taichung Second Senior High School has made a breakthrough decision to scrap their gender ratio in student enrollment and embrace co-ed classes starting from the 2025-2026 academic year. The change of pace was announced by the school's principal, Ou Jing-yu, in a recent interview.

The school initially mulled over co-ed classes back in 1994, then revisited the idea in 2004 and 2014, but each time the discussions resulted in no firm decisions.

At present, only language, science, mathematics, and music classes are mixed, while other classes remain segregated based on gender [1]. The faculty remains divided in their opinions regarding the impact of co-ed classes on student behavior and academic performance. Some educators argue that there exist differences in discipline, cleanliness, and academic achievement among male and female students, while others maintain that co-ed classes foster a more engaging learning environment.

Principal Ou Jing-yu believes that each student has a unique learning style, and the key lies in how effectively teachers can guide them.

In 2023, the school resurfaced the co-ed classes discussion, conducting surveys and meetings with staff members. After careful consideration and reaching a consensus, it was determined that the core issue lay in the uneven male-to-female admission ratio [2]. With this issue addressed, the school was cleared to shelve the gender ratio requirement and steadily transition into a fully co-ed educational setup.

Founded in 1922 during the Japanese colonial era, the school was originally known as the Taichung Prefectural Taichung Second Middle School. It underwent a name change after merging with Taichung Prefectural Taichung Second Girls' High School in 1946. In July 1952, the school stopped recruiting female students. The school reintroduced female students in 1982, when it established music experimental classes, though the classes remained gender-segregated [1].

Now, with the decision to embrace co-ed classes in the upcoming academic year, Taichung Second Senior High School embarks on a new path towards fostering a more inclusive and diverse learning community. As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life, and the school is certainly embracing this notion as it moves forward.

Students at Taichung Second Senior High School may find their learning experiences enriched by the integration of education-and-self-development resources designed to cater to diverse lifestyles in the co-ed environment, starting from the 2025-2026 academic year. Principal Ou Jing-yu envisions a more engaging learning environment where every student, with their unique learning style, can thrive, potentially fostering a more inclusive and diverse lifestyle within the school community.
