The Crow's Nest - February 6th, 2020 Update

Park University is set to host a series of engaging events this February, including the much-anticipated Langston Hughes Black History Month Lecture and a digital photography exhibit by Masoom Khawaja.

The lecture, focused on Hughes' work during the Harlem Renaissance, will be presented by Professor Shawn Alexander, Ph.D., from the University of Kansas. This event will take place in the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater within Alumni Hall on Park University's Parkville Campus. Admission is free, but registration is required.

Langston Hughes had a significant influence on *The Crisis* magazine during the Harlem Renaissance, a period of vibrant African-American cultural and artistic expression. Hughes, with his emphasis on creative freedom and cultural pride, challenged traditional notions of race and identity, making *The Crisis* a leading publisher of young Black authors during this era.

The lecture will delve into Hughes' advocacy for authentic self-expression, his exploration of controversial themes, and his role in shaping and promoting the New Negro Movement's artistic and intellectual output.

In addition to the lecture, the Campanella Gallery at Park University is currently hosting a digital photography exhibit by Masoom Khawaja. Khawaja, who prefers to take photos with a plain lens and does not manipulate or alter the images digitally, is showcasing her work through February 28, 2020. A reception for the artist will be held on February 7, 2020.

Upcoming events at Park University also include webinars, documentaries, lectures, and concerts. For instance, the Department of History, Political Science, and Interdisciplinary Studies will host a lecture by Ron Mallon, Ph.D., discussing racism and sexism on February 27, 2020.

The Spencer Cave Black History Month Lecture Series, named after Spencer Cave who worked for Park University for over 70 years, is organised by the Office of University Engagement's "Park Stories" initiative. This initiative showcases stories highlighting Park University students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

Tickets for the Langston Hughes Black History Month Lecture are $35 per person and can be purchased online or at the door. The lecture will take place on February 24, 2020. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about the influential works of Langston Hughes and the captivating digital photography of Masoom Khawaja.

Exploring the intersection of education-and-self-development and lifestyle, Park University's lineup in February extends beyond the Langston Hughes Black History Month Lecture. This series includes a digital photography exhibit by Masoom Khawaja, showcasing in the Campanella Gallery, emphasizing the terrain of general-news and creative arts.
