The pivotal force propelling U.S. global dominance: Self-governing academic institutions.

In the context of Korea's higher education, it's ironically disheartening that the ongoing struggles in American universities appear almost desirable. Due to the government's influence, Korean universities frequently find themselves compelled to mirror the challenges faced by their US counterparts.

US Investigations Raise Allegations of Discrimination at Harvard University

Harvard University faces multiple federal investigations over claims of race- and gender-based discrimination across various academic and administrative sectors, including faculty and employee hiring, promotions, compensation, and the selection process for the Harvard Law Review.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) launched an investigation on April 25, 2025, to determine whether Harvard violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by treating certain groups (white, Asian, male, or straight employees and applicants) unfairly in hiring, promotions, compensation, separation decisions, internships, mentoring, and leadership development programs. The investigation, which covers Harvard University and its affiliated entities such as the medical school and major hospitals, looks back to 2018.

Several federal agencies, including the Department of Education (ED), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Department of Justice (DOJ), have also joined the investigations. The Harvard Law Review in particular has been accused of discriminatory article selection practices that favor or disadvantage candidates based on race and gender.

The DOJ’s investigation, under its new Civil Rights Fraud Initiative, examines whether Harvard has knowingly violated civil rights laws while receiving federal funds, focusing on allegations of discrimination in its admissions process since the 2023 Supreme Court decision that ended affirmative action in college admissions. The DOJ is investigating whether Harvard’s admissions practices still result in discriminatory outcomes despite federal funding and compliance assurances.

Protests have erupted in various US cities in response to the ongoing investigations, including Cambridge, Massachusetts, and New York City, where people have rallied against conservative politicians who are withholding funding to influence how universities manage their institutions.

US newspapers have reported that Harvard has lost millions of dollars in grants as a result of this escalating battle with the Trump administration. The university could face further financial penalties if found to have falsely certified compliance with civil rights law while engaging in discriminatory practices, according to the Department of Justice's new initiative under the False Claims Act.

As the investigations continue, Harvard remains under close scrutiny for its practices regarding race, gender, and other protected characteristics, both in employment and academic settings. The potential consequences could impact the university's reputation and funding, as well as the broader higher education community in the United States.

  1. The international community, particularly US societies, are closely monitoring government investigations into Harvard University for alleged discrimination, with opinions split over the potential implications.
  2. Education and self-development platforms, such as online-education portals, are following the ongoing investigations, assessing their impact on the accessibility and fairness of education, as well as learning opportunities.
  3. In this era of advanced technology, the allegations of discrimination at Harvard University have raised questions about the equitability and impartiality of selection processes across various academic and administrative sectors.
  4. The government investigations into Harvard's practices could set a precedent, impacting the environment of higher education in the United States, as institutions strive to uphold fair and non-discriminatory policies.
  5. As Harvard University grapples with the fallout from these investigations, concerns about the erosion of civil rights in educational and employment settings have risen to the forefront of national discussions, driving calls for reform, transparency, and accountability.
