Thousands of Latvian students engage in job shadowing experience on Friday
In Latvia, the annual Shadow Day event has been connecting high school students with various professions for over 20 years. This year, the event saw a significant increase in participation, with students eager to learn about the real-world aspects of their chosen careers.
Among the most popular professions for shadowing this year were police inspectors or police officers, with a total of 296 students applying. This was closely followed by lawyers, with 295 students, and physiotherapists, who had 212 students expressing interest.
The field of media also saw a surge in interest, with 161 students applying to shadow television and radio presenters, and 102 students choosing to spend a day at Latvian Radio, learning about the behind-the-scenes work of sound engineers, producers, communicators, and other support staff.
The demand for these opportunities varies from place to place. Riga, the capital city, had more applicants than spots available, while other regions saw fewer applicants. This year, there were 150 students interested in shadowing firefighters, and 161 students who wanted to learn about the workings of the radio, including music selection and scheduling.
Cynologists and computer programmers also attracted a significant number of students, with 161 and 209 students applying respectively.
The aim of Shadow Day is to bridge the gap between the content of pupils' education and real life, helping them plan their careers, choose future professions, and prepare for the labour market.
Amanda, a fourth-year student, chose to shadow a journalist this year, while Mareks expressed interest in learning about the workings of the radio. Both students are part of the growing number of participants, which has grown from 30-40 a few years ago to 102 this year.
Despite the increased interest, the search results do not provide information on which school had the most students participating in Shadow Day or where most Shadow Days were offered in the reported year.
One profession that saw an unexpected surge in interest was that of flight attendants, with 195 students applying. This suggests a growing interest in the aviation industry among Latvia's youth.
In conclusion, Shadow Day 2022 has provided a valuable opportunity for Latvia's students to gain a first-hand experience of various professions, helping them make informed decisions about their future careers.
