It's a sooty surprise! More young whippersnappers than in the last decade have tirelessly dived into the world of chimney sweeping with a staggering 29% increase in trainees last year, according to the Federation of Chimney Sweep Trade. A whopping 796 enthusiastic apprentices began their blackened voyage at the recent Berlin conference.
Alexis Gula, the Federation's prez, chatted with the German Press Agency and mentioned that around 650 fresh recruits are required annually to counteract demographic shifts. Yet, last year, they surpassed that mark significantly. Gula's words echoed crystal clear, "If more is knocking at the door, we ain't gonna slam it in their face."
The industry aims to lure in young 'uns with a plethora of qualification opportunities. Apart from settling for the good ol' Fachhochschulreife, wagonloads of additional paths are open. There's the dual-study program for renewable energy, alongside the regular master and further training courses. The chimney sweep districts come up for grabs every seven years, ensuring many chances for the young'uns to take charge as independent sweepers.
The industry also dreams of cashing in on the climate-friendly heating scene. That's why they're lobbying for all heating types in Germany to get documented, just like fossil heat generators already are. Gula believes it's time to broaden the industry's scope, entrusting state-licensed companies with a comprehensive building-specific data collection. "It's like handing over the keys to the candy store, and who wouldn't wanna be a part of that?" he exclaimed.
