UNESCO Veteran Matoko Joins Race for Director-General, Promises Technical Solutions
Firmin Édouard Matoko, a seasoned diplomat and UNESCO veteran, has thrown his hat into the ring for the organisation's top job. Matoko, who served as minister of external relations for 15 years, believes his extensive experience in conflict resolution and post-conflict situations makes him an ideal candidate for the Director-General position.
Matoko, who has been a senior official at UNESCO for over three decades, prefers an insider's perspective for leading the organisation. He is not discouraged by being the underdog in the race, stating that he is a candidate for 'all nations and peoples', not just one region or country. Matoko's candidacy has been ongoing since he joined UNESCO 30 years ago, according to him.
During his time as minister of external relations, Matoko provided solutions in various conflict zones and proposed solutions in post-conflict situations. He believes UNESCO should provide technical solutions to politically complex situations, citing examples like the war in Ukraine, Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, and Afghanistan. Matoko welcomes contradiction and debate at UNESCO, stating that it is a space for dialogue and solidarity, and that every voice counts.
Matoko proposes a reflection on the mission and mandate of UNESCO, emphasizing its technical and intellectual role rather than political mediation. Meanwhile, UNESCO warns that the majority of World Heritage sites are at risk from drought or flooding. Matoko's passion for UNESCO and his commitment to its mission are evident, as seen in his partnership with Plastic Odyssey to restore marine World Heritage sites.
