Urge Extended to Search Committee Leader for UIHC Vice President's Position Application

Denise J. Jamieson, a renowned physician and public health expert, has been appointed as the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean at the Carver College of Medicine, University of Iowa. With a combined MD and MPH, Jamieson brings a unique blend of clinical medicine and public health expertise to her new role.

Jamieson, who is currently the chief of gynecology and obstetrics for Emory Healthcare, has an extensive background in medicine and public health leadership, including a significant role in medical education administration. She has also made notable contributions to national vaccine policy, having been a former member of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), where she helped shape evidence-based vaccine recommendations in the United States.

Brooks Jackson, the outgoing Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean, has co-authored over 70 articles and studies since 2007, according to Google Scholar and ResearchGate. Jackson and Jamieson have a shared history of research, having co-authored a study published in 2012 in the journal "Clinical Infectious Diseases" focused on mother and infant HIV infections and transmission.

Jamieson's appointment comes as Jackson prepares to "return to the faculty and pursue his research." During his tenure, Jackson visited the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (UIHC) on May 8, making him one of the finalists for the same position he is now vacating.

Jamieson expressed her interest in joining the University of Iowa, saying, "I'm thinking that I might want to be a Hawkeye." During her February visit to UIHC, she spoke with residents and medical students, gave a grand rounds presentation, and appreciated the hospital and clinics as a "very special place."

Notably, Jamieson was particularly moved by a picture of Jennifer Niebyl, who retired from UIHC's OB/GYN department in 2018, as Niebyl was one of the first female chairs of an OB/GYN department nationally.

Jamieson's public forum presentation as a finalist for the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean position at the University of Iowa focused on her experience with both medical and public health research and how the intersection of those sectors can compel new guidelines aimed at meaningful change in clinical medicine.

Jamieson's starting salary at the University of Iowa will be $1.3 million, according to her offer letter. This marks a significant increase from the current salary of Brooks Jackson, who earns $1.06 million, according to the university.

As Jamieson prepares to take on her new role, she will replace Jackson on August 1, bringing her unique blend of clinical medicine and public health expertise to the University of Iowa.

As Denise J. Jamieson transitions from her role as the chief of gynecology and obstetrics for Emory Healthcare, she will bring her extensive background in medicine and public health leadership to the University of Iowa, where she will focus on medical education administration, health-and-wellness research, and general news related to the Carver College of Medicine. With her appointment as the Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean, she aims to use the intersection of medical and public health research to compel new guidelines in education-and-self-development and health-and-wellness, aiming for meaningful change in clinical medicine.
