Weyer Primary School: Axing trees for expansion project

In Solingen, Germany, preparations are underway for the expansion of two schools, with 34 trees set to be felled to make way for new facilities. The expansions at Grundschule Schützenstraße and Weyer Elementary School will see the construction of additional classrooms, a canteen, and necessary infrastructure.

Beginning on January 3rd and 4th, eight trees, mainly London planes but also including other deciduous species such as mountain ash, white thorn, and common hazel, will be felled at Grundschule Schützenstraße. Among the trees to be removed are two old and prominent London planes. However, two more London planes will initially remain standing.

The district council Wald has approved the tree felling, which is a necessary prerequisite for the expansion. Work on the expansion at Grundschule Schützenstraße is scheduled to begin next summer.

To offset the loss of these trees, twelve replacement trees will be planted in the street area or on municipal sites in the vicinity in January. Four new trees will be planted in the Schimmelbusch green space near the school, while ten more deciduous trees and some hedges will be planted on the school grounds after the work is completed.

Simultaneously, the Weyer Elementary School is undergoing expansion with a new building on the schoolyard. The precise number of trees to be felled for this project and the planned replacement plantings have not been disclosed at this time.

German municipalities typically have strict environmental regulations that require compensatory or replacement plantings to offset the loss of trees in such situations. This practice helps maintain ecological balance and contributes to the city's overall green environment.

For precise and up-to-date information on the specific reasons for the felling of the trees and the detailed plans for replacement plantings in Solingen, residents are encouraged to consult Solingen’s official municipal website or local news sources. Alternatively, contacting local authorities directly may provide additional insights.

  1. The expansion at Grundschule Schützenstraße, which includes constructing additional classrooms, a canteen, and necessary infrastructure, has led to the planning of planting twelve replacement trees to offset the loss of eight older trees, mainly London planes, environmental-science experts suggest.
  2. Furthermore, as part of the environmental-education and self-development initiatives, local authorities are organizing a tree-planting event for residents, where they can participate in planting new trees on municipal sites or the school grounds, contributing to maintaining a balanced and green environment in Solingen.
