Workers starting out in their careers from specific nations are eligible for LMIA-exempt work permits
The International Experience Canada (IEC) program offers an exciting opportunity for young individuals from various countries to gain valuable work experience in Canada. This initiative, established through reciprocal international agreements promoting youth mobility, offers work permits for a one- to two-year duration to participants from select countries.
To be eligible for the IEC program, foreign nationals must be at least 18 years old, regardless of their country of origin. Eligibility and restrictions for each country and available categories can be checked on the IRCC's 'Who can apply' webpage. The age limit for participating countries varies, with citizens aged 18-30 or 18-35 being eligible, depending on their country of citizenship.
The IEC program operates under three specific streams: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op (Internship). Applying under the Young Professionals category with a job offer typically increases the chance of obtaining an LMIA-exempt IEC work permit.
To apply, you must complete the online form, provide necessary documentation, pay fees, and submit your complete application. It's essential to note that family members cannot be added to your application under the IEC program. They must apply for their own IEC or non-IEC work permit, a study permit, or a visitor visa.
The Working Holiday category operates on a lottery system due to high demand. If you are selected for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for a work permit in the next round of IEC invitations, you have 20 days to apply for a work permit.
Some countries allow participants to participate in the IEC program more than once. In limited cases, youth from non-partner countries can participate with assistance from certain Canadian-based recognized organizations (ROs). To qualify under the IEC program, you must have private health insurance, a valid passport, at least $2,500 in available funds, a round-trip ticket, and be admissible to Canada.
It's worth mentioning that IEC work permits are exempt from Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs), making them quicker and easier to obtain compared to permits under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). The IRCC aims to process IEC work permit applications within six weeks for the 2025 season.
Countries that have a youth mobility agreement with Canada allowing their youth to obtain IEC work permits include Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, France, Germany, South Korea, and the United Kingdom, among others. For more detailed information on eligibility, restrictions, and application procedures, visit the IRCC's 'Who can apply' webpage.
