Worldwide Commemorations Mark United Nations Anniversary
Amidst the ongoing global pandemic, the United Nations Day is commemorated with significance. On the eve of the UN's 75th anniversary, the Global Hub of the "Academic Impact" program at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University unveiled an updated office, as reported by Almaty.tv.
Positioned under the UN's aegis, the Hub is one of ten globally, and its primary objective is to stimulate the worldwide academic community to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals consist of 17 targets, pursued by the global community, such as eradicating poverty and hunger, ensuring quality education, and achieving gender equality, among others. The revamped Hub reveals various advancements made by the university's scientists, particularly those harnessing modern IT technologies.
Vlastimil Samek, a representative of the UN Information Bureau, expressed the importance of engaging youth in these initiatives. During his visit to the Kazakh National University named after al-Farabi, he emphasized the importance of interactive dialogues with young generations.
For the past 28 years, Kazakhstan has supported the UN's mission and charter consistently. In September, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev addressed the jubilee session of the UN General Assembly, expressing that Kazakhstan contributes to the work of all essential UN organs, including the Security Council. The country has been actively advocating for conflict resolution and nuclear non-proliferation, as well as interfaith and interethnic dialogue and protecting the interests of landlocked nations.
Tokayev called upon Kazakhstan to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to the UN mission and charter, highlighting the international organization's vital role in shaping a more stable, equitable, and prosperous world.
On the occasion of the UN Day, UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged the global community to celebrate current achievements while enduring to maintain peace. He acknowledged that many challenges still remained unresolved. Guterres also emphasized the urgency to combat the climate crisis, which threatens life itself, and to mobilize humanity to attain carbon neutrality—net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Established 75 years ago on October 24, 1945, the UN Charter consists of 193 member states today, including Kazakhstan. Our nation is a member of several UN specialized agencies and two regional commissions. Kazakhstan boasts a strong representation in the major and auxiliary organs of global organizations.
