In the heart of Duisburg, the town hall played host to an innovative event that aimed to bring about change. Organised by the local youth welfare office as a pilot project, the first participation day for young people in youth welfare was a resounding success.

Twelve dedicated individuals, including young people and representatives from various youth welfare providers, collaborated to develop the concept and contents of the event. The goal was clear: to create participation opportunities outside of the classic help planning sessions and break down barriers, facilitating an exchange on equal terms.

The day was filled with open discussions, workshops, and encounters over pizza and drinks. Thirty-eight children and young people aged 12 to 21 attended, eager to make their voices heard. The event included three workshops: children's rights, help planning, and feedback and suggestion opportunities at the youth welfare office Duisburg.

One participant described the event as 'really cool,' a testament to its success in fostering an inclusive and engaging atmosphere. Another noted that the day offered space for encounters and the exchange of ideas, paving the way for potential collaborations in the future.

The participants were encouraged to speak openly about what they think, with the organisers there to listen. Philipp Thelen, the acting youth welfare officer, expressed his wishes to the young people: they should dare to honestly say what they think, even if it's sometimes critical, and they should notice that their opinion counts.

During the event, both sides learned from each other. The youth welfare office, having prepared the participation day with representatives of free providers for a year, gained valuable insights into the perspectives and needs of the young people. In return, the young people gained a better understanding of the workings of the youth welfare office and the opportunities available to them.

The event marked the beginning of a new chapter in youth participation in Duisburg. Fifteen young people from Duisburg volunteered to collaborate as experts on their local environment with the youth welfare office, and the next youth participation day in Duisburg youth welfare is planned for 2026.

As the day drew to a close, many information and new contacts were taken home by the participants. The first participation day for young people in youth welfare was more than just a one-day event; it was a stepping stone towards a more inclusive and participatory youth welfare system in Duisburg.
